Name of Canada
The name of Canada has been in use since the founding of Canada in the 16th century, with the name originating from a Saint-Lawrence Iroquoian word for "settlement", "village", or "land". The name Canada is pronounced in English, in standard French of France, in standard Quebec French. In Inuktitut, one of the official languages of the territory of Nunavut, the First Nations word (pronounced ) is used, with the Inuktitut syllabics ᑲᓇᑕ.
