Egyptian Arabic: , locally: ) is a city in
Upper Egypt, and the capital of the
Qena Governorate. Situated on the east bank of the
Nile, it was known in antiquity as
Kaine (
Greek Καινή, meaning "new (city)"; Latinized transliteration:
Caene) and
Maximianopolis.
