Windsor Great Park (locally referred to simply as
the Great Park) is a large park of 2020 hectares , including a
deer park, to the south of the town of
Windsor on the border of
Berkshire and
Surrey in England. The park was, for many centuries, the private hunting ground of
Windsor Castle and dates primarily from the mid-13th century. Now largely open to the public (though not publicly funded), albeit running at a loss "...the annual gross deficit, which is down from £1.6 million in 2006 to £0.5 million in 2015..."-, the parkland is often open as a recreation area for visitors between dawn and dusk. It is owned and managed by the
Crown Estate and historically covered many times its area as
Windsor Forest,
Windsor Royal Park or its current name.
