Esophageal varices

esophageal varices

oesophageal varices
) are extremely
dilated
sub-mucosal
veins
in the lower third of the
esophagus
. They are most often a consequence of
portal hypertension
, commonly due to
cirrhosis
; patients with esophageal varices have a strong tendency to develop
bleeding
.
