A cenote ( or ) is a natural pit, or sinkhole, resulting from the collapse of limestonebedrock that exposes groundwater underneath. Especially associated with the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico, cenotes were sometimes used by the ancient Maya for sacrificial offerings.
