Constantinople

Constantinople (; ; ; modern ; ) was the capital city of the Roman/Byzantine (330–1204 and 1261–1453), the Latin (1204–1261), and the Ottoman (1453–1924) empires. It was reinaugurated in 324 AD at ancient Byzantium, as the new capital of the Roman Empire by Emperor Constantine the Great, after whom it was named, and dedicated on 11 May 330. In the 12th century, the city was the largest and wealthiest European city and it was instrumental in the advancement of Christianity during Roman and Byzantine times. After the loss of its territory, the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire was reduced to just its capital city and its environs, eventually falling to the Ottomans in 1453. Following the Muslim conquest, the former bastion of Christianity in the east, Constantinople, was turned into the capital of the Ottoman Empire, under which it prospered and flourished again. For many centuries the city was popularly called "Istanbul", from a Greek phrase meaning "to the city" , while officially it was known under various names, including Constantinople and Dersaadet. Names other than "Istanbul" became obsolete in late Ottoman Empire, and after Turkey switched to Latin script in 1928, it began to urge other countries to use the Turkish name, and "Istanbul" gradually attained international usage.

Die Stadt Konstantinopel wurde von dorischen Siedlern aus dem griechischen Mutterland um 660 v. Chr. unter dem Namen Byzantion gegründet. Am 11. Mai 330 n. Chr. machte der römische Kaiser Konstantin der Große sie zu seiner Hauptresidenz, baute sie großzügig aus und benannte sie offiziell in Nova Roma (Νέα ̔Ρώμη) um. In der Spätantike beanspruchte die Stadt auch den Rang als „Neues Rom“. Sie war die Hauptstadt des Oströmischen Reichs und blieb dies – abgesehen von der Eroberung im Vierten Kreuzzug – ununterbrochen bis zur osmanischen Eroberung 1453. Nach dem Tod Kaiser Konstantins 337 wurde die Stadt offiziell in Constantinopolis umbenannt. Unter den Namen und war es die Hauptstadt des Osmanischen Reichs.

Constantinopel (Grieks: Κωνσταντινούπολις, Kōnstantinoúpolis; Latijn: Nova Roma of Constantinopolis; Ottomaans: قسطنطینیه, Kostantiniyye) was de hoofdstad van het Romeinse, Oost-Romeinse, Byzantijnse, Latijnse en Ottomaanse Rijk. Gedurende het grootste deel van de middeleeuwen was Constantinopel de grootste en rijkste stad van Europa.

Constantinople (en latin , en grec ancien , en grec moderne , en turc ottoman , en arménien ) est l'appellation ancienne et historique de l'actuelle ville d'Istanbul en Turquie (du 11 mai 330 à 1930). Son nom original, « Byzance » (en grec ancien , venant soit du mot grec  signifiant « resserré » en référence au Bosphore, soit d'un mot thrace désignant le « rivage »), n'était plus en usage à l'époque de l'Empire, mais a été repris par les historiens modernes.
