Cyrillic

The Cyrillic script is an alphabetic writing system employed across Eastern Europe and north and central Asia. It is based on the Early Cyrillic, which was developed during the First Bulgarian Empire in the 9th century AD at the Preslav Literary School. It is the basis of alphabets used in various languages, past and present, in parts of Southeastern Europe and Northern Eurasia, especially those of Slavic origin, and non-Slavic languages influenced by Russian. , around 252 million people in Eurasia use it as the official alphabet for their national languages, with Russia accounting for about half of them. Cyrillic is one of the most used writing systems in the world.

Die kyrillische Schrift ist eine Buchstabenschrift, die in zahlreichen vor allem slawischen Sprachen in Europa und Asien verwendet wird. Sie ist nach Kyrill von Saloniki (826–869) benannt, der jedoch nicht Kyrillisch selbst, sondern die ihr vorausgehende glagolitische Schrift entworfen hat. Man nennt die kyrillische Schrift auch Kyrilliza (Кирилица, Кириллица, Ćirilica/Ћирилица) oder Asbuka (азбука; transliteriert Azbuka) nach den traditionellen beiden ersten Buchstaben a (slawisch as) und b (slawisch buki).

Het cyrillische alfabet (Russisch: , kirillitsa; Servisch: /, Macedonisch en Bulgaars: кирилица/ kirilica) is het alfabet dat in zes Slavische talen gebruikt wordt: Russisch, Oekraïens, Wit-Russisch, Servisch, Macedonisch en Bulgaars. Onder Russische invloed wordt ook in veel niet-Slavische talen als het Kazachs en het Tataars (Turkse talen), het Oedmoerts (een Finoegrische taal), het Mongools en nog veel andere kleinere talen zoals het Karelisch het cyrillische alfabet gebruikt. Tot 1859 werd ook het Roemeens in dit alfabet geschreven. In de voormalige Moldavische SSR werd het zogenaamde Moldavisch (Roemeens) in het cyrillische alfabet geschreven.
