District of Columbia retrocession
The District of Columbia retrocession was the process of returning part of the land that had been ceded to the federal government of the United States for the purpose of creating the national capital. The area known as the District of Columbia was formed in 1790, with of land ceded by the states of Maryland and Virginia in accordance with the Residence Act. The area of which was ceded by Virginia was returned to that state in 1846.
