Dum Dum (
Bengali দমদম
Dômdôm) is a populated municipality now corporation under Barrakpore Commissionaire April 2015 by Smt Mamata Banerjee Chief Minister West Bengal near north
Kolkata. It comes under
Barrackpore sub-division and North 24 Parganas district of the state of
West Bengal. It is a part of the area covered by
Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority. It is one of the main entry points to the city of
Kolkata, providing a number of transportation facilities into that city from the northwest, such as
Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, formerly Dum Dum Airport, which offers domestic and international flights. Dum Dum has developed into a modern commercial centre and also hosts the Ordnance Factory Dumdum (OFDC) and Gun & Shell Factory Cossipore(GSF) of the
Ordnance Factories Board, which manufactures armaments and other equipment for the Indian Armed Forces, Navy & Air Force. Dum Dum region is about 10 km from the city centre, defined as the Esplanade, Kolkata. The nearby localities include Nager Bazar, Motijheel, Ghughu Danga, Private Road, Chatakal, Jawpur, Rajbari and Lal Bagan.
