Irlande est celle des harpistes des clans gaéliques datant du . La
harpe figure comme emblème du pays depuis au moins le . On ne sait rien des musiciens non professionnels ni des danses pratiquées à l'époque mais le harpiste accompagnait un poète qui proclamait les louanges du chef de clan auquel il était rattaché.
