Lama (martial art)
This article is about the closely related Lama Pai, Hop Gar, and Tibetan White Crane styles of martial arts. For the Fujianese style of White Crane, see Fujian White Crane (martial art).
While today the martial arts known as Lama Pai, Tibetan White Crane, and Hop Gar exist as relatively distinct lineages and/or organizations, all (according to lineage legends) originated with a single figure known as Sing Lung who arrived in Guangdong Province during the Qing Dynasty; Sing Lung supposedly taught a martial art then known as "Lion's Roar" (獅子吼), a system of tantras largely purported to be resident in the syllabus of Hop Gar, White Crane, and Lama. This article will attempt to explain the folk history of the tradition as a whole, the current supposed differences between the lineages, organizations, and "common" traits.
