Paisley Underground is an early genre of
alternative rock, based primarily in Los Angeles, which was at its most popular in the mid-1980s. Paisley Underground bands incorporated
psychedelia, rich vocal harmonies and guitar interplay that merged
folk rock influences and a
post-punk style, owing a particular debt to 1960s–1970s groups such as
Love and
The Byrds, but more generally referencing a wide range of pop and
garage rock.
