Second

The second (symbol: s) (abbreviated s or sec) is the base unit of time in the International System of Units (SI). It is qualitatively defined as the second division of the hour by sixty, the first division by sixty being the minute. It is quantitatively defined in terms of a certain number of periods – about 9 billion – of a certain frequency of radiation from the caesium atom: a so-called atomic clock. Seconds may be measured using a mechanical, electric or atomic clock.

Die Sekunde ist die Basiseinheit der Zeit im internationalen Einheitensystem (SI). Sie ist etwa einen Herzschlag lang (Ruhepuls eines Erwachsenen).

Het woord seconde is afkomstig van het Latijnse pars minuta secunda dat letterlijk tweede kleine deel betekent. Voor een deel heeft dat betrekking op het zestigtallige stelsel zoals dat in Babylon in gebruik was. Men verdeelt tegenwoordig nog steeds uren en booggraden eerst in 60 minuten (dat wil zeggen kleine deeltjes) en deze weer in 60 seconden (tweede kleine deeltjes). Het woord heeft betekenissen in de natuurkunde, de wiskunde en de muziek.
