Stol is the highest mountain of the
Karawanks, located on the border of Austria and Slovenia. It is known as
Hochstuhl in
German (meaning 'High Chair'), or
Veliki Stol (which is
Slovenian for 'Great Chair') and has an elevation of . The first ascent of the mountain was made in 1794 by
Carniolan Count Franz von Hohenwart. Today there are numerous routes to the summit from
Feistritz and the
Klagenfurt Lodge in
Carinthia on the Austrian side as well as routes from
Žirovnica on the Slovenian side, where the
Prešeren Lodge (
Prešernova koca) stands below the secondary peak of Mali Stol, .
