Taraori
Taraori or Tarori or Tarawari, as it is sometimes called in the local dialect, is a city (Municipal committee) and a Tehsil Nilokheri, 16 km north of Karnal in Karnal district in the Indian state of Haryana. It was here that in 1191 CE that the Hindu army under Prithviraj Chauhan had defeated the invading army of Muhammad of Ghaur. The following year Ghauri invaded again and defeated Prithviraj's forces at this same site (details : Battles of Tarain). A wall around the fort is now in a dilapidated condition. A mosque and a tank, said to be the works of Aurangzeb, are still in existence. Taraori is also famous for its Gurudwara of shri Guru Teg Bahadur (9th Guru of Sikhs) (Shishganj sahib Gurudwara), fort of Prithviraj Chauhan and Basmati Rice. The name of Taraori is extracted from the word "Taraine" (ترائن).
