Visigoths

The Visigoths (UK: ; US: , ) were branches of the nomadic tribes of Germanic peoples referred to collectively as the Goths. These tribes flourished and spread during the late Roman Empire in Late Antiquity, or the Migration Period. The Visigoths emerged from earlier Gothic groups (possibly the Thervingi) who had invaded the Roman Empire beginning in 376 and had defeated the Romans at the Battle of Adrianople in 378. Relations between the Romans and the Visigoths were variable, alternately warring with one another and making treaties when convenient. The Visigoths invaded Italy under Alaric I and sacked Rome in 410. After the Visigoths sacked Rome, they began settling down, first in southern Gaul and eventually in Spain and Portugal, where they founded the Visigothic Kingdom and maintained a presence from the 5th to the 8th centuries AD.

De Visigoten waren een belangrijk (Oost-) Germaans volk ten tijde van, en vlak na, het Romeinse Rijk. Vanaf 270 na Chr. begonnen de klassieke geschiedschrijvers onderscheid te maken tussen twee Gotische stammen. De Visigoten worden ook wel Westgoten genoemd ter onderscheiding van de Ostrogoten of Oostgoten. Deze benaming is echter omstreden. Vermoedelijk zijn de benamingen ontstaan op basis van de verschillende gebieden waarin de Goten zich hadden gevestigd. Een alternatieve betekenis die aan de benaming Visigoten wordt gegeven, is "dappere Goten" of "valante Goten", terwijl ook de betekenis "wijze Goten" is gesuggereerd. Dit zou ook meer in overeenstemming zijn met het geloof van de Goten dat 'west', de plaats waar de zon ondergaat, de bode van de dood is en dus niet iets wat men als zijn eigen naam zal aannemen. 'Oost' in dat geval, de plaats waar de zon opkomt, is het symbool van leven en dus wel geschikt als naam.

Les Wisigoths (« Goths sages » ou « Goths de l'ouest» ) ou Tervinges (« peuple de la forêt ») (en allemand et néerlandais Westgoten, « Goths de l'ouest ») étaient un peuple germanique issu des Goths. Les Wisigoths sont ceux qui, migrant depuis la région de la mer Noire, s'installèrent vers 270-275 dans la province romaine abandonnée de Dacie (actuelle Roumanie), au sein de l'Empire romain, alors que les Ostrogoths s'installèrent, pour leur part, en Sarmatie (actuelle Ukraine). Les Wisigoths migrèrent à nouveau vers l'ouest dès 376 et vécurent au sein de l'Empire romain d'Occident, en Hispanie et en Aquitaine. Les Ostrogoths, eux, migrèrent aussi vers l'ouest, mais plus tard que les Wisigoths, et vécurent en Italie. Wisigoths et Ostrogoths sont classés dans la branche ostique des peuples germaniques. Après la chute de l'Empire romain d'Occident (476), les Wisigoths ont continué pendant près de 250 ans à jouer un rôle important en Europe occidentale. C'est peut-être le peuple « barbare » le plus prestigieux d'Europe, tant par sa longue histoire et ses origines mythiques, que par les traces qu'il laissa longtemps dans les esprits.
