Adoption is a process whereby a person assumes the parenting of another, usually a child, from that person's biological or legal parent or parents, and, in so doing, permanently transfers all rights and responsibilities, along with filiation, from the biological parent or parents. Unlike guardianship or other systems designed for the care of the young, adoption is intended to effect a permanent change in status and as such requires societal recognition, either through legal or religious sanction. Historically, some societies have enacted specific laws governing adoption; where others have tried to achieve adoption through less formal means, notably via contracts that specified inheritance rights and parental responsibilities without an accompanying transfer of filiation. Modern systems of adoption, arising in the 20th century, tend to be governed by comprehensive statutes and regulations.

Adoption (von ) oder Annahme an Kindes statt oder Annahme als Kind bezeichnet die rechtliche Begründung eines Eltern-Kind-Verhältnisses zwischen dem Annehmenden und dem Kind ohne Rücksicht auf die biologische Abstammung.

Adoptie is de aanname van een persoon als kind. In juridische zin is adoptie de breuk van de familieband tussen biologische ouders en hun kind en tegelijk de vaststelling van een nieuwe, wettelijk geldende familieband tussen adoptieouders en dit kind, met alle rechten en plichten die daarbij horen. Geadopteerden krijgen bijvoorbeeld de achternaam van hun adoptieouders en ook erfrecht, net als biologische kinderen. Adoptie als kinderbeschermingsmaatregel is een recent verschijnsel. In de loop van de twintigste eeuw werd adoptie van minderjarigen in de meeste landen wettelijk geregeld; in België in 1940 en in Nederland als een van de laatste in Europa in 1956.

En droit de la famille, l'adoption du latin  (étymologiquement : , « à choisir ») signifie « donner à quelqu'un le rang et les droits de ou de ». Autrement dit, l'adoption est une institution par laquelle un lien de famille ou de filiation est créé entre l'adopté, généralement un enfant et le ou les adoptants, son/ses nouveaux parents qui ne sont pas ses parents biologiques. L'adopté devient l'enfant de l'adoptant (lien de filiation) et obtient donc des droits et des devoirs moraux et patrimoniaux.
