alfabet

An alphabet is a standard set of letters (basic written symbols or graphemes) which is used to write one or more languages based on the general principle that the letters represent phonemes (basic significant sounds) of the spoken language. This is in contrast to other types of writing systems, such as syllabaries (in which each character represents a syllable) and logographies (in which each character represents a word, morpheme, or semantic unit).

Een alfabet of – in het bijzonder met betrekking tot het Latijnse alfabet – abc (meervoud: alfabetten of abc's) is een verzameling symbolen om equivalenten van klanken in de gesproken taal schriftelijk weer te geven. In deze zin betekent alfabet nagenoeg hetzelfde als schrift (alfabetisch schrift).

Un alphabet (de alpha et bêta, les deux premières lettres de l’alphabet grec, dérivé de l'alphabet phénicien) est un ensemble de symboles  destiné à représenter plus ou moins précisément les phonèmes d’une langue.

Alfabet (od stgr. nazw pierwszych liter alfabetu: alfa i beta) – najpopularniejszy system zapisywania mowy. Termin ten używany jest w trzech głównych, powiązanych ze sobą i niekiedy mylonych znaczeniach, co jest źródłem licznych nieporozumień w dziedzinie historii i teorii pisma, oraz w jednym znaczeniu pochodnym. Piąty sens obejmuje użycie niepoprawne, czyli nazywanie "alfabetami" systemów nie będących nimi (pseudoalfabetów).
