Antiquity (noun) and ancient (adjective of antiquity, or obsolete noun for an old person) may refer to:

• any period before the Middle Ages (476–1453), but still within the period of Western civilization-based human history or prehistory. The term is most often used of Classical antiquity, the classical civilizations of the Mediterranean, especially Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome.
• "Ancient history" generally, and may be used of any historical period before the Middle Ages

• Antiquities, the term—almost always in the plural in modern usage, referring to objects or artifacts surviving from ancient cultures.

Antike (von „alt, altertümlich, altehrwürdig“) bezeichnet eine Epoche im Mittelmeerraum, die etwa von 800 v. Chr. bis ca. 600 n. Chr. reicht, wobei der Beginn teilweise noch deutlich früher angesetzt wird. Die Antike unterscheidet sich von vorhergehenden und nachfolgenden Epochen durch gemeinsame und durchgängige kulturelle Traditionen. Sie umfasst die Geschichte des antiken Griechenlands, des Hellenismus und des Römischen Reichs. Insbesondere das Römische Reich vereinte den Mittelmeerraum seit dem 1. Jahrhundert n. Chr. politisch und kulturell.

Met Oudheid wordt over het algemeen die periode in de geschiedenis van een bepaalde cultuur bedoeld die begint met de ontwikkeling van het schrift en het ontstaan van een beschaving. De Oudheid wordt voorafgegaan door de 'prehistorie', de bijna oneindig lange periode zonder schrift.
De geschiedenis van Europa wordt gewoonlijk in drie perioden onderverdeeld: Oudheid, Middeleeuwen en Nieuwe Tijd. Er bestaat ook een indeling in vier perioden: de Nieuwe Tijd kan namelijk verder worden onderverdeeld, maar dat heeft geen invloed op het begrip 'oudheid'.

L'Antiquité est une époque de l'Histoire. C'est par le développement ou l'adoption de l'écriture que l'Antiquité succède à la Préhistoire : certaines civilisations de ces périodes charnières n'avaient pas d'écriture, mais sont mentionnées dans les écrits d'autres civilisations : on les place dans la Protohistoire. Le passage de la Préhistoire à l'Antiquité s'est donc produit à différentes périodes pour les différents peuples.
