Autonomy (Ancient Greek: αὐτονομία autonomia from αὐτόνομος autonomos from αὐτο- auto- "self" and νόμος nomos, "law", hence when combined understood to mean "one who gives oneself one's own law") is a concept found in moral, political, and bioethical philosophy. Within these contexts, it is the capacity of a rational individual to make an informed, un-coerced decision.

Als Autonomie ( autonomía ‚Eigengesetzlichkeit‘, ‚Selbstständigkeit‘, aus αὐτός autós ‚selbst‘ und νόμος nómos ‚Gesetz‘) bezeichnet man den Zustand der Selbstbestimmung, Selbstständigkeit, Unabhängigkeit (Souveränität), Selbstverwaltung oder Entscheidungsfreiheit. Ihr Gegenteil ist die Heteronomie.

De term autonomie is afgeleid van het Grieks αυτονομία (autonomía, autos (zelf) + nomos (wet), autonomos (eigen wetten opleggend)) en beschrijft het vrij zijn van extern bestuur. Het concept wordt teruggevonden in politiek, technisch, filosofisch, geneeskundig, moreel en psychologisch verband. Het verwijst daarbij vaak naar de capaciteit van een rationeel individu of bestuur om eigen verantwoorde beslissingen te nemen. Een goed Nederlands synoniem is zelfbestuur of bij individuen zelfstandigheid. Het tegenovergestelde van autonoom is heteronoom.

Pojęcie autonomia pochodzi od (staro)greckiego αυτονομία, (αὐτονομία) autonomía = możliwość stanowienia norm samemu sobie, samodzielność prawna. Dziś używa się go w zależności od dyscypliny (gospodarka, prawo, polityka) lub kontekstu w znaczeniu suwerenność, niezawisłość, niezależność, samorządność, (całkowita lub częściowa).
