The terms big cat and great cat, while not a biological classification, are used informally to distinguish the larger felid species from smaller ones. A narrower definition of it includes five members of the genus Panthera: the tiger, lion, jaguar, leopard, and snow leopard. Only members of this genus are able to roar. A more expansive definition additionally includes the cougar, clouded leopard and cheetah. Especially the clouded leopard is considered an evolutionary link between big and small cats.

He first appeared in the 1998 Dreamcast game Sonic Adventure, where he was placed to justify the presence of a fishing rod in the game, although he was conceived beforehand. Die Großkatzen (Pantherinae) sind eine Unterfamilie der Katzen (Felidae). Der Begriff „groß“ deutet an, dass sich in dieser Gruppe die größeren Vertreter der Katzen befinden. Kriterium für die Zugehörigkeit ist jedoch nicht die Körpergröße, sondern die tatsächliche Verwandtschaft, die durch DNA-Analysen und morphologische Details wie den Bau des Zungenbeins ermittelt wird. Daher zählen einige größere Katzen wie der Puma und der Gepard nicht zur Gruppe der Großkatzen.

Fauve se réfère au sens large aux mammifères carnivores, et en particulier aux moyens à grands félins. Ce terme est également employé pour distinguer les grands félins  du chat domestique et des autres petits félidés. Les fauves sont apparus en Europe il y a environ 40 millions d'années d'après différents fossiles retrouvés. Ils ont ensuite colonisé le reste de la Terre et se sont adaptés à des habitats très diversifiés : forêt, savane, climat aride, tropical ou polaire… Les fauves sont des carnivores. Les carnivores se distinguent par des caractéristiques dentaires spécifiques : canines en forme de crocs et des dents carnassières servant à broyer et à trancher la viande (par analogie aux lames d'une paire de ciseaux).
