Bookbinding is the process of physically assembling a book from an ordered stack of paper sheets that are folded together into sections or sometimes left as a stack of individual sheets. The stack is then bound together along one edge by either sewing with thread through the folds or by a layer of flexible adhesive. For protection, the bound stack is either wrapped in a flexible cover or attached to stiff boards. Finally, an attractive cover is adhered to the boards and a label with identifying information is attached to the covers along with additional decoration. Book artists or specialists in book decoration can greatly expand the previous explanation to include book like objects of visual art with high value and artistic merit of exceptional quality in addition to the book's content of text and illustrations.

Als Buchbinden bezeichnet man den letzten Arbeitsgang der Buchherstellung nach Abschluss der Druckarbeiten. Er umfasst alle Schritte vom Ordnen und Zusammenfügen der Seiten bzw. Lagen eines Buches bis zum Versehen des Buchblocks mit einem Einband und der anschließenden Verzierung.

Boekbinden is het fysiek samenstellen van een boek uit een aantal aparte vellen papier of ander materiaal zoals dierenhuid. Het ambacht moet ontstaan zijn in de laatantieke tijd, toen men geschriften niet meer op rollen maar op losse vellen papier ging bewaren. Pas met de komst van de boekdrukkunst is dit ambacht een belangrijke rol gaan vervullen in het bewaren van intellectuele eigendom. De elite ging prat op een eigen bibliotheek waarvan de waardevolste boeken door de boekbinder werden gebonden in leder, met goud op (de) snee en gouden letters op de rug (zie verder).

La reliure (nom dérivé de relier, lui-même issu du latin religare) consiste à lier, à rassembler une ou plusieurs feuilles d'un livre, pliées ou non en « cahier », de façon à en prévenir la dégradation, à en permettre l'usage durable et, souvent, à lui donner une esthétique avenante. Par extension, le terme désigne aussi le résultat de ce travail.
