Cell is a peer-reviewed scientific journal publishing research papers across a broad range of disciplines within the life sciences. The journal was established in 1974 by Benjamin Lewin and is published twice monthly by Cell Press, an imprint of Elsevier.

Cell (oder auch Cell-Broadband-Engine) ist der Name für eine Prozessorserie, die von IBM gemeinsam mit Sony und Toshiba entwickelt wurde. Die Prozessoren zeichnen sich durch die Nutzung eines 64-Bit-PowerPC-Kernes, einer Pipeline-Architektur, Unterstützung für Simultaneous Multithreading und dem Einsatz einer heterogenen Mehrkern-Architektur aus, wodurch sie für paralleles Rechnen prädestiniert sind.

Cell es una arquitectura de microprocesador desarrollada conjuntamente por Sony Computer Entertainment, Toshiba, e IBM, en una alianza conocida con el nombre de “STI”. El diseño de arquitectura y su primera implementación se llevaron a cabo en el STI Design Center de Austin, Texas, durante un periodo total de cuatro años que comenzó en marzo de 2001, empleando un presupuesto de 400 millones de dólares según IBM.

De Cell-processor is een architectuurontwerp voor microprocessoren, gemaakt door Sony, Toshiba en IBM (STI). Het bestaat uit een centrale processor gebaseerd op de 64-bit PowerPC chip van IBM, de PPE (PowerPC Processing Element), met een aantal SPE's (Synergistic Processing Elements) ter ondersteuning. Deze SPE's zijn in staat om zeer snel bewerkingen op 128-bit waarden te voeren. De 128 bits brede interne registers kunnen naar keuze worden gebruikt als één integer- of floatingpointwaarde van 128 bits (quad word), twee waardes van 64 bits (onder andere double precision floating point), vier waardes van 32 bits (onder andere single precision floating point), acht van 16 bits of 16 van 8 bits. Tijdens elke klokcyclus worden deze waarden parallel verwerkt.
