Cheating is the getting of a reward for ability or finding an easy way out of an unpleasant situation by dishonest means. It is generally used for the breaking of rules to gain unfair advantage in a competitive situation. This broad definition will necessarily include acts of bribery, cronyism, sleaze, nepotism and any situation where individuals are given preference using inappropriate criteria. The rules infringed may be explicit, or they may be from an unwritten code of conduct based on morality, ethics or custom, making the identification of cheating conduct a potentially subjective process. Cheating can refer specifically to marital infidelity. Someone who is known for cheating is referred to as a cheat in British English, and a cheater in American English. A person described as a "cheat" doesn't necessarily cheat all the time, but rather, relies on unfair tactics to the point of acquiring a reputation for it.

Valsspelen is het heimelijk overtreden van de regels van een sport of spel om zo de uitslag te manipuleren. De eindstand zal hierdoor niet de werkelijke inspanningen van de deelnemers reflecteren. Valsspelen kan gezien worden als een lichte of onschuldige vorm van fraude, hoewel soms, wanneer grote financiële belangen of een reputatie op het spel staan, dit zeer serieus wordt genomen. In sommige gevallen kan valsspelen tot strafrechtelijke vervolging van de dader leiden. Iemand die valsspeelt wordt een valsspeler genoemd. Ook het creatief omgaan met spelregels wordt wel eens als valsspelen gezien.

La tricherie est le fait de ne pas respecter des règles pour profiter d'avantages. On peut tricher au jeu, dans le sport, à un examen (antisèches, copier sur le voisin…). Quelqu'un qui triche est appelé un tricheur. Lorsqu'on découvre que quelqu'un a triché, il est généralement sanctionné.

Fusk är metoder för att på otillåtna sätt skapa sig fördelar på sätt som bryter mot skrivna eller oskrivna regler. För många typers fusk finns etablerade bestraffningsmetoder avsedda att göra fusk olönsamt.

Vilppi on epärehellinen keino tai teko, etenkin jonkun harhauttamiseksi. Vilppiä ovat muun muassa petos ja harhautus. Myös kokeissa lunttaamista tai toisen opiskelijan harjoitustyön kopioimista tai tentin tekemistä toisen opiskelijan puolesta pidetään vilppinä.
