Cut-up (oder:
Schnitttechnik) nennt man eine Methode, den
Zufall und die moderne
Montage zum Beispiel in die
Literatur einzubeziehen. 1959 erschuf
Brion Gysin diese zufällig. Ähnliche Ansätze waren von
Max Frisch und
James Joyce bereits entwickelt worden.
William S. Burroughs wurde zu einem der bekanntesten
Protagonisten des Cut-up, und diese Schreibtechnik wurde von mehreren Autoren der
Beat Generation bevorzugt. Im deutschsprachigen Raum standen unter anderem
Jürgen Ploog und
Carl Weissner in der Tradition des Cut–up. J. Ploog formulierte die „Schnitt-Schreibweise“ folgendermaßen: „
Die simpelste Form ist, 2 beliebige Seiten eigenen oder fremden Textes senkrecht zu zerschneiden & die 4 Hälften in vertauschter Reihenfolge wieder zusammenzusetzen. Man beginnt nun über die semantischen Bruchstellen hinwegzulesen“.
