A coup d'état ( ; , literally "blow of state"; plural: coups d'état, pronounced like the singular form), also known simply as a coup , or an overthrow, is the sudden and illegal seizure of a state, usually instigated by a small group of the existing government establishment to depose the established regime and replace it with a new ruling body. A coup d'état is considered successful when the usurpers establish their dominance and legitimacy. If a coup fails, a civil war may ensue.

Ein Putsch (auch Staatsstreich oder Coup d’État [] genannt) ist eine oft überraschende, meist gewaltsame Aktion von Angehörigen des Militärs oder paramilitärischer Organisationen und/oder einer Gruppe von Politikern mit dem Ziel, die Regierung zu stürzen und die Macht im Staat zu übernehmen. Putschisten sind jene Menschen, die einen Putsch ausführen; meist sind es hohe Militäroffiziere oder Führer paramilitärischer Organisationen.

Een staatsgreep, coup, coup d'état of putsch is de plotselinge, illegale afzetting van een regering, meestal door een kleine groep van een instelling van de bestaande staat - gewoonlijk door het leger - om de afgezette regering te vervangen door een andere instelling; hetzij burgerlijk, hetzij militair. Een staatsgreep slaagt als de overweldigers hun dominantie vestigen wanneer de zittende regering er niet in slaagt hun machtsversterking te voorkomen of met succes te weerstaan. Als de coup ofwel niet volledig faalt, ofwel niet in het geheel succes boekt, zal de poging tot een staatsgreep waarschijnlijk leiden tot een burgeroorlog.

Un coup d'État est un renversement du pouvoir par une personne investie d'une autorité, de façon illégale et souvent brutale. On le distingue d'une révolution en ce que celle-ci est populaire. Le putsch est un coup d'État réalisé par la force des armes.

L’État possède une triple signification :

• sociologique
• organisationnelle
• juridique

Sur le plan sociologique, l'État est un ensemble de personnes vivant sur un territoire déterminé et soumis à un gouvernement donné. Cette définition rejoint celle de la première édition du dictionnaire de l’Académie française de 1696 qui définit l'État comme le , ou bien le pays lui-même, c'est-à-dire l'État entendu .

Zamach stanu (przewrót, pucz – niem. Putsch, hiszp. golpe de estado, fr. coup d'état) – niespodziewane, często z użyciem siły (zbrojny zamach stanu), przejęcie władzy politycznej w państwie przez jednostkę lub grupę osób, wbrew obowiązującemu prawu. Jest pogwałceniem normalnego toku życia politycznego i porządku instytucjonalnego. Oznacza pozakonstytucyjną i pozaprawną drogę przejęcia kontroli nad państwem. Do niedawna w wielu krajach Ameryki Łacińskiej i Afryki zamach stanu był najczęściej spotykaną metodą zmiany rządu.
