The seven deadly sins, also known as the capital vices or cardinal sins, is a Western religious grouping and classification of vices. This grouping emerged in the fourth century AD and was used for Christian ethical education and for confession. Though the sins have fluctuated over time, the currently recognized list includes pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath and sloth. There is a parallel tradition of seven virtues.

Mit Todsünde (peccatum mortiferum oder mortale) werden im Katechismus der Katholischen Kirche besonders schwerwiegende Arten der Sünde bezeichnet.

Hoofdzonde is een term die voornamelijk in de katholieke kerk wordt gebruikt. Het gaat hierbij om zeven zonden die ieder aan de basis liggen van vele andere zonden. Ze werden als lijst in de 6e eeuw opgesteld door paus Gregorius I, maar zijn al in de 4e eeuw door geestelijken in een gesystematiseerd overzicht beschreven. In de Bijbel zijn verschillende opsommingen van zonden te vinden, die echter niet overeenkomen met de lijst van de zeven hoofdzonden. Het begrip hoofdzonde wordt wel eens verward met het begrip doodzonde of zware zonde.

Dans la religion catholique, les péchés capitaux correspondent aux péchés dont découlent tous les autres. Ainsi, le mot capital n'est pas en rapport avec la gravité (par exemple, le meurtre n’y figure pas ; le blasphème non plus). Il vient du latin caput (« tête »), par comparaison à cette partie du corps qui dirige l’ensemble : le péché capital conduit à d’autres péchés. Pour cette raison, la Somme théologique de saint Thomas d’Aquin indique que l’appellation de « vices » serait plus appropriée que celle de « péchés ».

Siedem grzechów głównych (łac. peccata capitalia) – zgodnie z Katechizmem Kościoła Katolickiego, nr 1866, określenie dla grzechów wyróżnionymi przez doświadczenie chrześcijańskie za św. Janem Kasjanem i św. Grzegorzem Wielkim. Nazywa się je „głównymi”, ponieważ powodują inne grzechy i inne wady, a także są podłożem, na którym może powstać i rozwinąć się wiele innych występków, nieprawości, zaniedbań. Są nimi:

1. pycha
2. chciwość
3. nieczystość
4. zazdrość
5. łakomstwo
6. gniew
7. lenistwo lub znużenie duchowe.
