A dielectric material (dielectric for short) is an electrical insulator that can be polarized by an applied electric field. When a dielectric is placed in an electric field, electric charges do not flow through the material as they do in a conductor, but only slightly shift from their average equilibrium positions causing dielectric polarization. Because of dielectric polarization, positive charges are displaced toward the field and negative charges shift in the opposite direction. This creates an internal electric field that reduces the overall field within the dielectric itself. If a dielectric is composed of weakly bonded molecules, those molecules not only become polarized, but also reorient so that their symmetry axes align to the field.

Als Dielektrikum (Mehrzahl: Dielektrika) wird jede elektrisch schwach- oder nichtleitende, nichtmetallische Substanz bezeichnet, deren Ladungsträger im Allgemeinen nicht frei beweglich sind. Ein Dielektrikum kann sowohl ein Gas als auch eine Flüssigkeit oder ein Feststoff sein.

Een diëlektricum is een stof of een materiaal met zodanige elektrische eigenschappen dat de polarisatie een overheersende rol speelt ten opzichte van elektrische geleiding en magnetisatie. Er kan dus gesteld worden dat diëlektrica zeer slechte geleiders zijn. Hun elektronenconfiguratie zorgt ervoor dat er nagenoeg geen geleiding mogelijk is, in tegenstelling tot geleiders als bijvoorbeeld koper. Dientengevolge worden deze diëlektrica ook wel als isolator gebruikt. Veel toegepaste diëlektrica in bijvoorbeeld condensatoren zijn lucht, mica, bariumtitanaat, glas, aluminiumoxide en tantaaloxide.

Un matériau est diélectrique (mot composé du préfixe dia (δια)- (au travers) et électrique) s'il ne contient pas de charges électriques susceptibles de se déplacer de façon macroscopique. Le milieu ne peut donc pas conduire le courant électrique, et est par définition un isolant électrique. Quelques exemples de milieux diélectriques : le vide, le verre, le bois sec, de nombreux plastiques

Dielektryk, izolator elektryczny – materiał, w którym bardzo słabo przewodzony jest prąd elektryczny. Może to być rezultatem niskiej koncentracji ładunków swobodnych, niskiej ich ruchliwości, lub obu tych czynników równocześnie.
