An economic system is a system of production, resource allocation, exchange, and distribution of goods and services in a society or a given geographic area. It includes the combination of the various institutions, agencies, entities, decision-making processes, and patterns of consumption that comprise the economic structure of a given community. As such, an economic system is a type of social system. The mode of production is a related concept.

Wirtschaftssystem bezeichnet die Ordnung der Gesamtheit des Wirtschaftslebens in einem Land (Volkswirtschaft). Im Mittelpunkt steht die Koordination der Einzelpläne der privaten und öffentlichen Wirtschaftssubjekte, insbesondere welche Güter in quantitativer, qualitativer, räumlicher und zeitlicher Beziehung produziert werden, welche Arbeitskräfte und Produktionsmittel an welcher Stelle des Wirtschaftsprozesses eingesetzt werden und wie die Ergebnisse verteilt werden.

Un modèle économique, ou système économique, est un mode d’organisation et de fonctionnement de l’activité économique, dont les caractéristiques influencent entre autres la production de biens et services, les relations sociales et le fonctionnement du marché du travail.
