An eyelid is a thin fold of skin that covers and protects the human eye. The levator palpebrae superioris muscle retracts the eyelid to "open" the eye. This can be either voluntarily or involuntarily. The human eyelid features a row of eyelashes along the eyelid margin, which serve to heighten the protection of the eye from dust and foreign debris, as well as from perspiration. "Palpebral" (and "blepharal") means relating to the eyelids. Its key function is to regularly spread the tears and other secretions on the eye surface to keep it moist, since the cornea must be continuously moist. They keep the eyes from drying out when asleep. Moreover, the blink reflex protects the eye from foreign bodies.

Ein Augenlid (, Blepharon) ist eine dünne, aus Muskeln, Drüsen, Bindegewebe und Haut bestehende Falte, welche die vordere Begrenzung der Augenhöhle (Orbita) bildet. Es gibt ein Ober- und ein Unterlid, die Öffnung zwischen beiden wird Lidspalte genannt. Die schläfen- und nasenseitige Stelle, an denen beide sowohl in geöffnetem, als auch geschlossenem Zustand zusammentreffen, wird als Lidwinkel bezeichnet, die Linie zwischen beiden Lidwinkeln als Lidachse.

Sommige dieren hebben een derde ooglid (Palpebra tertia). Dit heeft overigens niets te maken met het derde oog dat sommige dieren hebben. Dit derde ooglid is bij mensen rudimentair. Bij veel gewervelde dieren zoals haaien, krokodillen en vogels is dit derde ooglid transparant en kan als een soort beschermbril voor de ogen geslagen worden. Dit is bijvoorbeeld handig als gezwommen of gegraven wordt. Bij alle slangen en veel gekko's zijn de oogleden zelfs vergroeid met de ogen en zijn onbeweeglijk.
