federation

A federation (from Latin: foedus, gen.: foederis, "covenant"), also known as a federal state, is a political entity characterized by a union of partially self-governing states or regions under a central (federal) government. In a federation, the self-governing status of the component states, as well as the division of power between them and the central government, are typically constitutionally entrenched and may not be altered by a unilateral decision of either party, the states or the federal political body.

Als Bundesstaat bezeichnet man:

• einen Staat, der sich aus einer staatsrechtlichen Verbindung einzelner Teilstaaten konstituiert (Föderation), siehe Bundesstaat (Föderaler Staat)
• die (Mit-) Gliedstaaten verschiedener föderaler Staaten oder Staatenbünde

Un État fédéral (ou fédération) (, l'alliance), est un État habituellement souverain, composé de plusieurs entités autonomes dotées de leur propre gouvernement, nommées entités fédérées. Le statut de ces entités est généralement garanti par la Constitution, et ne peut être remis en cause par une décision unilatérale du gouvernement central fédéral. La forme de gouvernement de l'État fédéral, ou sa structure constitutionnelle, est nommée fédéralisme. C'est un ensemble d'États qui se sont unis et qui ont une certaine autonomie tout en reconnaissant une autorité supérieure commune.
