As a piece of cutlery or kitchenware, a fork is a tool consisting of a handle with several narrow tines on one end. The fork is a primarily Western utensil, whereas in East Asia chopsticks have been more prevalent. Today, forks are increasingly available throughout East Asia. The usually metal utensil is used to lift food to the mouth or to hold ingredients in place while they are being cut by a knife. Food can be lifted either by spearing it on the tines, or by holding it on top of the tines, which are often curved slightly. A fork is shaped in the form of a trident but curved at the joint of the handle to the points.

In computing, particularly in the context of the Unix operating system and its workalikes, fork is an operation whereby a process creates a copy of itself. It is usually a system call, implemented in the kernel. Fork is the primary (and historically, only) method of process creation on Unix-like operating systems.

Fork (englisch „Gabel“, „Verzweigung“) steht für:

• Abspaltung (Softwareentwicklung), eine Abspaltung von einem Software-Projekt
• Fork (Unix), ein Systemaufruf des Betriebssystems Unix
• in der Modellierung von Zustandsdiagrammen die englische Definition des Zustands Gabelung, siehe Zustandsdiagramm (UML)
• die Möglichkeit einiger Dateisysteme zur Unterteilung von Dateien, siehe HFS (Dateisystem) und Alternativer Datenstrom

In unixoiden Betriebssystemen ist fork der Name eines Systemaufrufs, anhand dessen der aufrufende Prozess (Elternprozess) eine Kopie von sich selbst erzeugt, einen sog. Kindprozess. Der Kindprozess übernimmt dabei die Daten, den Code, den Befehlszähler und die Dateideskriptoren vom Elternprozess und erhält vom Kernel (wie der Elternprozess und jeder andere Prozess auch) eine eigene Prozessnummer, die PID (engl. „Process IDentifier“). In der Folge verwaltet das Betriebssystem den Kindprozess als eigenständige Instanz des Programms und führt ihn unabhängig vom Elternprozess aus.

Una bifurcación (fork en inglés), en el ámbito del desarrollo de software, es la creación de un proyecto en una dirección distinta de la principal u oficial tomando el código fuente del proyecto ya existente. Comúnmente se utiliza el término inglés. Como resultado de la bifurcación se pueden llegar a generar proyectos diferentes que cubren necesidades distintas aunque similares. El término también puede ser usado para representar la ramificación de cualquier trabajo. Un ejemplo de bifurcación es la Enciclopedia Libre escindida de la Wikipedia en español.

Een vork is een onderdeel van het bestek, is meestal gemaakt van metaal, en bestaat uit een handvat met daaraan een aantal tanden (gewoonlijk drie of vier). Een vork wordt vooral gebruikt tijdens het snijden van voedsel: om het op de plaats te houden, en om afgesneden stukjes naar de mond te brengen. Verder overlapt de functie van de vork die van de lepel ten dele: veel voedsel kan zowel met een lepel als met een vork naar de mond gebracht worden.
