form of government

A government is the system by which a state or community is controlled. In the Commonwealth of Nations, the word government is also used more narrowly to refer to the collective group of people that exercises executive authority in a state. This usage is analogous to what is called an "administration" in American English. Furthermore, especially in American English, the concepts of the state and the government may be used synonymously to refer to the person or group of people exercising authority over a politically organized territory. Finally, government is also sometimes used in English as a synonym for governance.

Regierungsform steht in der Politikwissenschaft für:

• Regierungssystem, die formale Funktionsweise der Regierung (vor allem in der jüngeren, angelsächsisch orientierten politikwissenschaftlichen Literatur)
• Herrschaftsform, die Art und Weise der Herrschaftsausübung (insbesondere in der älteren staatsphilosophischen Literatur) bzw. damit zusammenhängend
• Regime, d. h. ein Ordnungssystem
• seltener auch für Staatsform

Een regeringsvorm beschrijft de manier waarop een overheidsverband geregeerd wordt of misschien zou kunnen worden. In het algemeen gaat het hierbij om staten of landen, maar het is ook mogelijk de regeringsvorm van supranationale organisaties of decentrale overheden te beschrijven.

Le régime politique fait référence à la manière dont les pouvoirs sont organisés et exercés au sein d'une entité politique donnée. Cela renvoie donc à la forme institutionnelle du pouvoir mais aussi à la pratique découlant de cette forme institutionnelle. Cela dépasse l'étude constitutionnelle (qui analyse les structures formelles d'un État) mais n'est pas non plus à confondre avec l'étude des systèmes politiques (c'est-à-dire l'étude des acteurs et des actions).

Statsskick är det sätt varmed en suverän stat organiseras. Den klassiska indelningen av statsskick utgår ifrån hur statschefen tillsätts: monarki om ämbetet är ärftligt (t.ex Sverige), republik om ämbetet tillsätts av en valmanskår (till exempel Finland).
