Fourth is een album uit 1971 van de Britse band Soft Machine. Deze elpee was het vierde album van de groep. Dit volledig instrumentale album ging nog meer de kant op van jazzrock dan het vorige album Third en was het laatste album waaraan drummer, zanger en medeoprichter Robert Wyatt zou meewerken. Zijn hang naar het absurdisme stond de ontwikkeling van de groep naar een pure jazzformatie in de weg. Wyatt was geen jazzdrummer pur sang en zoals hij zelf zei "They didn't ask me to stay". Hij verliet na de opnames de band en begon een nieuwe groep, genaamd Matching Mole.

Fourth è un album dei Soft Machine del 1971, noto negli Stati Uniti anche come Four o 4. È il primo disco interamente strumentale del gruppo (anche se il precedente Third aveva già completato la transizione verso il jazz) e segna l'abbandono definitivo del pop psichedelico e del rock progressivo degli esordi. È anche l'ultimo disco registrato con il batterista e membro fondatore Robert Wyatt, che l'anno successivo pubblicherà il suo primo album solista, The End of an Ear e fonderà poi un nuovo gruppo, i Matching Mole. Come nei precedenti album dei Soft Machine, anche in Fourth hanno collaborato alcuni turnisti che non fanno parte dei Soft Machine, ma hanno comunque seguito il gruppo anche in tour.

Fourth je ctvrté studiové album britské skupiny Soft Machine, vydané v únoru 1971 u vydavatelství CBS Records. Nahráno bylo od ríjna do listopadu predchozího roku ve studiu Olympic Studios v Londýne a o produkci se starala skupina sama. V roce 1999 vyšlo album v reedici spolecne s následujícím Fifth na jednom CD.
