A gag is usually an item or device designed to prevent speech, often as a restraint device to stop the subject from calling for help and keep its wearer quiet. This is usually done by blocking the mouth, partially or completely, or attempting to prevent the tongue, lips, or jaw from moving in the normal patterns of speech. They are often less effective in reality than in crime fiction. They carry a strong risk of killing the victim by suffocation. The more "effective" a gag appears to be, the more hazardous it is: for example, duct tape is fairly effective but is hazardous if for some reason (e.g., the common cold) the subject cannot breathe freely through the nose.

Wanda Hazel Gág (* 11. März 1893 in New Ulm, Minnesota; † 27. Juni 1946 in New York City) war eine amerikanische Künstlerin, Autorin, Übersetzerin und Illustratorin. Bekannt wurde sie durch das von ihr geschriebene und illustrierte Kinderbuch Millions of Cats, das mit dem Newbery Honor Award und dem Lewis Carroll Shelf Award ausgezeichnet wurde. Es ist das älteste amerikanische Bilderbuch, das noch gedruckt wird. Ihr Buch The ABC Bunny erhielt ebenfalls einen Newbery Honor Award, ihre Bücher Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs und Nothing at All wurden mit dem Caldecott Honor Award ausgezeichnet. Weite Aufmerksamkeit erhielten 1940 ihre überarbeiteten Tagebucheinträge aus den Jahren 1908 bis 1917, die unter dem Titel Growing Pains publiziert wurden.
