In modern parlance, the term gentleman (from Latin gentilis, belonging to a race or gens, and man, the Italian gentil uomo or gentiluomo, the French gentilhomme, the Spanish  gentilhombre, and the Portuguese homem gentil) refers to any man of good, courteous conduct. It may also refer to all men collectively, as in indications of gender-separated facilities, or as a sign of the speaker's own courtesy when addressing others. The modern female equivalent is lady.

"Gentleman" is a K-pop song by South Korean musician Psy released on April 12, 2013 (KST), serving as his 19th single. It is the follow-up to his international hit single "Gangnam Style", which at the time of "Gentleman"'s release had been viewed on YouTube over 1.5 billion times. The first public performance of the song, with its associated dance, was unveiled at 6:30 pm on April 13 at Seoul World Cup Stadium in Seoul. A poster and Twitter message was released containing the main line of the song "I'm a mother f••••• gentleman"; The obscured word was later revealed to be "father".

Der Begriff Gentleman bezeichnet einen aufgrund seiner Geburt, seines Charakters oder anderer Umstände in irgendeiner Form sozial herausgehobenen Mann und ist ins Deutsche am ehesten zu übersetzen mit Ehrenmann. Der Begriff wurde in England geprägt und galt stets als besonderer Ausdruck britischen Nationalcharakters.

Un gentleman est l'équivalent anglais du gentilhomme français. Ce concept est plus particulièrement attaché à l'ère victorienne, même si le prototype du gentleman apparaît dès l'époque georgienne. Il se distingue notamment par son calme et son stoïcisme face aux maux qu'il ne peut éviter, ses bonnes manières et sa courtoisie envers tous ceux qu'il côtoie. On le dit « parfaitement élevé » (perfectly bred, selon le terme de John Ruskin), car il a reçu une bonne éducation dans une public school. Un gentleman est réservé, et ne se met jamais en avant. Par conséquent, il ne se dira jamais gentleman.

La qualification de gentilhomme (en , francisation tardive due à l'admiration portée sur les gentilshommes français), portée en France jusqu'à la fin du , était une dénomination réservée aux hommes légitimement nobles, c'est-à-dire noble d'extraction à la différence de l'anobli par ou par lettres patentes du roi, lequel est noble sans être gentilhomme mais il communique la noblesse à ses enfants, lesquels deviennent gentilshommes. Ils possédaient alors la « gentillesse », c'est-à-dire la noblesse légale.
