harmony

In music, harmony is the use of simultaneous pitches (tones, notes), or chords. The study of harmony involves chords and their construction and chord progressions and the principles of connection that govern them. Harmony is often said to refer to the "vertical" aspect of music, as distinguished from melodic line, or the "horizontal" aspect. Counterpoint, which refers to the interweaving of melodic lines, and polyphony, which refers to the relationship of separate independent voices, are thus sometimes distinguished from harmony.

Harmonik (von harmonía „Ebenmaß“, „Harmonie“) ist ein umfassender Begriff aus der Musiktheorie und -praxis. Er steht für den Zusammenklang der Töne, welche auch die vertikale Komponente der Musik genannt wird im Unterschied zu den horizontalen Komponenten der Rhythmik und Melodik.

Harmonieleer is het onderwerp binnen de muziektheorie dat de opeenvolging van akkoorden en hun samenhang beschrijft. In de klassieke muziek is er traditioneel sprake van zogeheten tonaal-functionele harmonie, alternatieven zijn onder andere de modaal-functionele harmonie en de atonaliteit. Er is sprake van harmonie wanneer er meerdere en verschillende tonen tegelijk klinken. In de striktere zin wordt in de harmonieleer onder harmonie verstaan: de (al dan niet functionele) opeenvolging van akkoorden. Een akkoord is in de klassieke harmonieleer doorgaans een opeenstapeling van minimaal 2 tertsen op een trap (ook wel een 'drieklank' genoemd). In de ruimere zin wordt onder harmonie verstaan: het omgaan met samenklanken binnen een stuk of stijl.
