Hoop is de onzekere verwachting dat een bepaalde gewenste gebeurtenis zal plaatsvinden. Er zijn twee tegengestelden van hoop: wanhoop als de kans op de gewenste gebeurtenis verkeken lijkt, of vrees als de (onzekere) verwachting een ongewenste gebeurtenis betreft. Bij valse hoop is de verwachting geheel op fantasie gebaseerd of op een gebeurtenis met een verwaarloosbare kans van optreden.
