ironing

Ironing is the use of a heated tool (an iron) to remove wrinkles from fabric. The heating is commonly done to a temperature of 180–220 °Celsius, depending on the fabric. Ironing works by loosening the bonds between the long-chain polymer molecules in the fibers of the material. While the molecules are hot, the fibers are straightened by the weight of the iron, and they hold their new shape as they cool. Some fabrics, such as cotton, require the addition of water to loosen the intermolecular bonds. Many modern fabrics (developed in or after the mid-twentieth century) are advertised as needing little or no ironing. Permanent press clothing was developed to reduce the ironing necessary by combining wrinkle-resistant polyester with cotton.

Ein Bügeleisen, Plätteisen oder Glätteisen ist ein Gerät zum Glätten (Bügeln, ndd.: Plätten) und In-Form-Bringen von Textilien, vor allem von Kleidungs­stücken, Tisch- und Bettwäsche. Für diesen Vorgang werden Druck, Wärme und manchmal auch Feuchtigkeit genutzt.

Una plancha es un electrodoméstico, aunque también hay planchas para uso industrial y comercial, usadas en fábricas de ropa y tintorerías, que sirve para alisar la ropa quitándole las arrugas y las marcas. La plancha trabaja aflojando los vínculos entre las cadenas largas de moléculas de polímero que existen en las fibras del material. Las fibras se estiran y mantienen su nueva forma cuando se enfrían. Esto lo logra con calor, ya que funciona como una resistencia calentadora con peso. Algunos materiales como el algodón requieren el empleo de agua o vapor de agua para aflojar los lazos intermoleculares.

Een strijkijzer of strijkbout is een huishoudelijk gereedschap dat gebruikt wordt om textiel door middel van warmte en eventueel stoom glad te strijken na het drogen. Het strijken heeft niet alleen een functie voor het mooi maken van textiel, maar het bevordert ook de hygiëne, doordat bacteriën door de hitte gedood worden. Dit is bijvoorbeeld zinvol voor zakdoeken, theedoeken en handdoeken.

Le repassage consiste à lisser une pièce de tissu, généralement les vêtements et le linge de maison venant d'être lavés, afin d'en retirer les plis. L'outil principalement utilisé est appelé fer à repasser, bien que de nos jours, celui-ci ne soit plus constitué de fer.
