Jazz is a genre of music that originated from African American communities of New Orleans in the United States during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It emerged in the form of independent traditional music and popular musical styles, all linked by the common bonds of African American and European American musical parentage with a performance orientation. Jazz spans a period of over a hundred years, encompassing a range of music from ragtime to jazz-rock fusion of the 1970s and 1980s, and has proved to be difficult to define. Jazz makes heavy use of improvisation, polyrhythms, syncopation and the swing note, as well as aspects of European harmony, American popular music, the brass band tradition, and African musical elements such as blue notes and African-American styles such as ragtime. Although the foundation of Jazz is deeply rooted within the black experience of America, different cultures have contributed their own experience to the music aswhile. Jazz music has led intellectuals from around the world to hail jazz as "one of America's original art forms".

Tango is a style of music in 2/4 or 4/4 time that originated among European immigrant populations of Argentina and Uruguay (collectively, the "Rioplatenses"). It is traditionally played on a solo guitar, guitar duo, or an ensemble, known as the orquesta típica, which includes at least two violins, flute, piano, double bass, and at least two bandoneóns. Sometimes guitars and a clarinet join the ensemble. Tango may be purely instrumental or may include a vocalist. Tango music and dance have become popular throughout the world.

Oorspronkelijk betekende het woord jazz een "zeer energieke dans". Jazz werd in de beginjaren door het grote publiek niet erg geaccepteerd, vooral omdat deze soort muziek geassocieerd werd met losse zeden en een lage sociale status. Toen 'blanke' en gemengde jazzorkesten zoals dat van Benny Goodman vanaf de jaren dertig deze muziek begonnen te spelen, werd het ook voor blanken een aanvaarde vorm van entertainment. De swingperiode die toen begon betekende een hoogtepunt in de populariteit van jazz, iets dat voornamelijk te danken was aan het feit dat jazz toen nog steeds uitsluitend dansmuziek was. Toen jazz vanaf de jaren vijftig evolueerde naar meer experimentele muzikale vormen, en vanwege de opkomst van opwindende dansmuziek zoals rock-'n-roll, ging de verkoop van jazzplaten sterk achteruit.
