The Book of Judges (Hebrew: Sefer Shoftim ספר שופטים) is the seventh book of the Hebrew Bible and the Christian Bible. Its title describes its contents: it contains the history of Biblical judges, divinely inspired leaders whose direct knowledge of Yahweh allows them to act as champions for the Israelites from oppression by foreign rulers, and models of wise and faithful behaviour required of them by their God Yahweh following the exodus from Egypt and the conquest of Canaan. The stories follow a consistent pattern: the people are unfaithful to Yahweh and he therefore delivers them into the hands of their enemies; the people repent and entreat Yahweh for mercy, which he sends in the form of a leader or champion (a "judge"); the judge delivers the Israelites from oppression and they prosper, but soon they fall again into unfaithfulness and the cycle is repeated. Scholars consider many of the stories in Judges to be the oldest in the Deuteronomistic history with their major redaction dated to the 8th century BCE and with materials (such as the Song of Deborah) dating from much earlier, perhaps close to the period the book depicts.

Das Buch der Richter (Abkürzung: Ri; hebr.: Sefer Schoftim ספר שופטים) ist ein Teil des Tanach und somit des Alten Testaments. Seit dem Mittelalter wird es in 21 Kapitel unterteilt.

Een rechter is iemand die rechtspreekt. Meestal wordt met het woord rechter een magistraat van de rechterlijke macht bedoeld. De rechter is wettelijk verplicht een oordeel uit te spreken over een concreet geschil, dat hem voorgelegd wordt. Daarbij houdt de rechter rekening met:

• de wet
• de rechtspraak (of jurisprudentie)
• de rechtsleer (of doctrine)
• de gewoonte.

Voor de consumenten van het recht is het belangrijk te weten dat het recht breder is dan alleen de wet. Dienaren der wet (dienders) kijken alleen of de wet wordt gevolgd en daarom is het vaak voor een betrokkene wenselijk een proces-verbaal aan de rechter voor te leggen.

Le Livre des Juges (en hébreu  Sefer Shoftim) est l'un des livres de la Bible hébraïque. Il raconte la période de l'histoire des Hébreux entre la conquête du Pays de Canaan (rapportée dans le livre de Josué) et l'apparition de la royauté. À cette époque (vers -1150--1130), le pouvoir est exercé par les Juges. C'est sous la pression d'un danger précis et sur un mode plutôt défensif que les tribus d'Israël mettent à leur tête un chef : c'est l'époque des Juges (shofet).
