]] Met Kelten wordt een verzameling volkeren en stammen aangeduid die gedurende het millennium vóór het begin van onze jaartelling en de eeuwen daarna een Keltische taal spraken. Het is dus primair een linguïstisch begrip. Een Kelt was een spreker van een Keltische taal.
Hun voorouders verspreidden zich vanuit een kerngebied in Centraal-Europa zowel in westelijke als oostelijke richting. Rond het begin van onze jaartelling bevolkten Keltische stammen de Britse Eilanden, Gallië, het Iberisch Schiereiland en delen van Midden-Europa en de Balkan. De Keltische talen behoren tot de Indo-Europese taalfamilie.
