Luminescence is emission of light by a substance not resulting from heat; it is thus a form of cold body radiation. It can be caused by chemical reactions, electrical energy, subatomic motions, or stress on a crystal. This distinguishes luminescence from incandescence, which is light emitted by a substance as a result of heating. Historically, radioactivity was thought of as a form of "radio-luminescence", although it is today considered to be separate since it involves more than electromagnetic radiation. The term 'luminescence' was introduced in 1888 by Eilhard Wiedemann. The dials, hands, scales and signs of aviation and navigational instruments and markings are often coated with luminescent materials in a process known as 'luminising'.

Bei der Lumineszenz führt ein physikalisches System eine von außen zugeführte Energie ganz oder teilweise nicht seiner thermischen Energie zu, sondern wird von der absorbierten Energie in einen angeregten Zustand versetzt und emittiert Licht (inklusive Strahlung außerhalb des sichtbaren Bereichs). Die Bezeichnung Lumineszenz kann sich auf den Prozess wie auf die ausgesandte Strahlung beziehen.

Als atomen overgaan van een hogere naar een lagere energietoestand, wordt er soms licht uitgestraald. Dit gebeurt wanneer energierijke elektronen vanuit een aangeslagen toestand naar een baan met een lagere energie rond de atoomkern springen. De energie die hierbij vrij komt, wordt door het elektron uitgezonden als een foton, dus als elektromagnetische straling. Afhankelijk van het energieverschil kan het zijn dat de uitgezonden straling binnen het golflengtebereik (ca. 400 nm ... ca. 780 nm) van het voor de mens zichtbare licht ligt. In dat geval spreekt men van luminescentie.

La lumière émise par luminescence résulte d'interactions entre particules électriquement chargées. Dans les cas les plus fréquents, ce sont des transitions électroniques ayant lieu dans des atomes, des molécules ou des cristaux qui provoquent l'émission de photons. L'énergie libérée sous forme de lumière lors de la transition peut être initialement fournie sous forme électrique, chimique, mécanique ou lumineuse.
