mainland

Mainland is a contiguous landmass that is larger than and often politically, economically and/or demographically more significant than politically associated islands or exclaves, especially outlying oceanic islands situated outside the continental shelf.

Mainland ist sowohl eine (dort übliche) Bezeichnung für die Hauptinsel der Britischen Inseln als auch im Besonderen der Name zweier schottischer Inseln der nördlichen Archipele:

• Mainland (Shetlandinsel)

Als Landfläche, Landmasse oder Festland wird in den Geowissenschaften (insbesondere der Geographie) jener Teil der Erdoberfläche bezeichnet, der sich über den Meeresspiegel erhebt und auch bei Flut nicht vom Wasser der Ozeane bedeckt wird.
