manuscript

A manuscript (abbreviated MS or MSS for plural) is any document written by hand or typewritten, as opposed to being mechanically printed or reproduced in some automated way. More recently it is understood to be an author's written, typed, or word-processed copy of a work, as distinguished from the print of the same. Before the arrival of printing, all documents and books were manuscripts. Manuscripts are not defined by their contents, which may combine writing with mathematical calculations, maps, explanatory figures or illustrations. Manuscripts may be in book form, scrolls or in codex format. Illuminated manuscripts are enriched with pictures, border decorations, elaborately embossed initial letters or full-page illustrations.

Unter Manuskript oder Handschrift versteht man in der Bibliothekswissenschaft oder Editionsphilologie handgeschriebene Bücher, Briefe oder andere Publikationsformen (von ‚von Hand Geschriebenes‘).

Een manuscript (Latijn) of handschrift (Nederlands) is een met hand geschreven tekst, dus een tekst die niet gedrukt is. Meer specifiek kan dit zijn:

• Een geschreven werk, in het algemeen van voor de tijd van de boekdrukkunst, zie: handschrift (boek).
• Een tekst die door een auteur geschreven is (met de hand of een schrijfmachine, tegenwoordig met een tekstverwerker) om gedrukt te worden, zie: manuscript (modern).

Un manuscrit (du latin manu scriptum) est, littéralement, un texte « écrit à la main », sur un support souple, que ce soit par son auteur (« manuscrit autographe ») ou par un copiste, avant l'invention de l'imprimerie. Le terme s'applique à différents supports (papyrus, parchemin ou papier) mais ne s'emploie pas pour des supports rigides, comme les tablettes de cire ou les inscriptions épigraphiques ou rupestres. Avant la mise au point de l'imprimerie, au milieu du , tous les livres étaient des manuscrits.
