martyrdom

A martyr (Greek: μάρτυς, mártys, "witness"; stem μάρτυρ-, mártyr-) is somebody who suffers persecution and/or death for advocating, renouncing, refusing to renounce, and/or refusing to advocate a belief or cause as demanded by an external party. This refusal to comply with the presented demands results in the punishment or execution of the martyr by the oppressor. Originally applied only to those who suffered for their religious beliefs, it is now often used also used for people imprisoned or executed for espousing a political cause.

Märtyrer, auch Martyrer (von griechisch  „Zeuge“ oder „Zeugnis“, „Beweis“; weibliche Formen Märtyrerin bzw. Martyrerin sowie Märtyrin bzw. Martyrin) sind Menschen, die um des Bekenntnisses ihres Glaubens willen leiden, ggf. ihren gewaltsamen Tod erdulden.

Een martelaar of martelares (Grieks: martys - getuige, martyrion - getuigenis) is iemand die lijdt of sterft voor zijn of haar geloof, vaak door te worden doodgemarteld.

Un martyr (du grec ancien  / , « témoin ») est une personne qui consent à aller jusqu’à se laisser tuer pour témoigner de sa foi, plutôt que d’abjurer. « Martyr » appartient essentiellement, et à l'origine, à la terminologie chrétienne ; le mot doit être différencié du martyre qui est l’acte même de mise à mort ou les tourments infligés.
