mess

A mess (also called a messdeck aboard ships) is an area where military personnel socialize, eat, and (in some cases) live. In some societies this military usage has extended to other disciplined services eateries such as civilian fire fighting and police forces. The root of mess is the Old French mes, "portion of food" (cf. modern French mets), drawn from the Latin verb mittere, meaning "to send" and "to put" (cf. modern French mettre), the original sense being "a course of a meal put on the table"; cfr. also the modern Italian portata with the same meaning, past participle of portare, to bring. This sense of mess, which appeared in English in the 13th century, was often used for cooked or liquid dishes in particular, as in the "mess of pottage" (porridge or soup). By the 15th century, a group of people who ate together were also called a mess, and it is this sense that persists in the "mess halls" of the modern military.

Multi Emulator Super System (MESS) is an emulator for many game consoles and computer systems, based on the MAME core and now a part of MAME. MESS emulates portable and console gaming systems, computer platforms, and calculators. The project strives for accuracy and portability and therefore is not always the fastest emulator for any one particular system. However, its accuracy makes it useful for homebrew game development.

MESS (für Multiple Emulator Super System), früher u.a. als Standardsnapshot in MESSGUI teils auch M.E.S.S. ist ein seit 1998 verfügbares Emulator-System für viele Spielekonsolen und Computersysteme.

Das Meeß, auch Mäß, war ein Volumen- und Getreidemaß in Regensburg.

Mess war ein österreichisches Musikduo der 1980er Jahre. Es bestand aus Elisabeth Engstler und Michael Scheickl (unter dem Künstlernamen Fritz), die auch verheiratet waren.

(MESS) est un émulateur de nombreuses consoles de jeux et autres systèmes informatiques, basé sur le logiciel MAME. Depuis le 27 mai 2015, faisant partie intégrante de MAME, le projet se poursuit donc en un seul exécutable pour l'arcade, les consoles et les ordinateurs.

Le mess désignait au un plat cuisiné ou liquide (comme la bouillie ou la soupe), puis au un groupe de personnes mangeant ensemble. Au Luxembourg, on utilise le terme de mess à la place de cantine (d'entreprise, par exemple). En Belgique, le terme est utilisé pour les cantines des administrations.
