In mathematical analysis, the maxima and minima (the plural of maximum and minimum) of a function, known collectively as extrema (the plural of extremum), are the largest and smallest value of the function, either within a given range (the local or relative extrema) or on the entire domain of a function (the global or absolute extrema). Pierre de Fermat was one of the first mathematicians to propose a general technique, adequality, for finding the maxima and minima of functions.

Minimum (lat. minimum „das Kleinste“) steht für:

• unterer Extremwert einer Funktion
• kleinster Wert aus einer geordneten Menge, siehe größtes und kleinstes Element
• Minimum (Einheit), eine Maßeinheit des Raumes
• Minimum (Manga), eine japanische Manga-Reihe

In der Mathematik ist ein Extremwert (oder Extremum; Plural: Extrema) der Oberbegriff für ein lokales beziehungsweise globales Maximum oder Minimum. Ein lokales Maximum ist der Wert der Funktion an einer Stelle , in deren Umgebung die Funktion keine größeren Werte annimmt. Die zugehörige Stelle wird lokaler Maximierer/Minimierer oder Extremstelle (Maximalstelle/Minimalstelle) genannt, die Kombination aus Stelle und Wert Extrempunkt.
