network topology

Network topology is the arrangement of the various elements (links, nodes, etc.) of a computer network. Essentially, it is the topological structure of a network and may be depicted physically or logically. Physical topology is the placement of the various components of a network, including device location and cable installation, while logical topology illustrates how data flows within a network, regardless of its physical design. Distances between nodes, physical interconnections, transmission rates, or signal types may differ between two networks, yet their topologies may be identical.

Die Topologie bezeichnet bei einem Computernetz die Struktur der Verbindungen mehrerer Geräte untereinander, um einen gemeinsamen Datenaustausch zu gewährleisten.

De indeling en koppelingen van bijvoorbeeld computers binnen een netwerk, of bijvoorbeeld telefooncentrales in een telecommunicatienetwerk noemt men de netwerktopologie. Dit is dus de manier waarop de computers of telefooncentrales onderling met elkaar verbonden zijn. Men onderscheidt de volgende soorten: vermaasd netwerk (Engels: mesh topology), sternetwerk (Engels: star topology), busstructuur (Engels: bus topology), ringnetwerk (Engels: ring topology) en boomstructuur (Engels: tree topology).

Une topologie de réseau informatique correspond à l'architecture (physique ou logique) de celui-ci, définissant les liaisons entre les équipements du réseau et une hiérarchie éventuelle entre eux.
