Odds are a numerical expression, usually expressed as a pair of numbers, used in both gambling and statistics. In statistics, the odds for or odds of some event reflect the likelihood that the event will take place. Odds against reflect the likelihood that a particular event will not take place. In gambling, the odds are the ratio of payoff to stake, and do not necessarily reflect exactly the probabilities. Odds are expressed in several ways (see below), and sometimes the term is used incorrectly to mean simply the probability of an event. Conventionally, gambling odds are expressed in the form "X to Y", where X and Y are numbers, and it is implied that the odds are odds against the event on which the gambler is considering wagering. In both gambling and statistics, the 'odds' are a numerical expression of the likelihood of some possible event.

Odds stellen in der Wahrscheinlichkeitstheorie und Statistik eine Möglichkeit dar, Wahrscheinlichkeiten anzugeben. Beispielsweise spricht man von einer 1:1-Chance, dass bei einem Münzwurf Kopf oder von einer 1:5-Chance, dass eine 6 beim Würfeln erscheint. Mathematisch berechnen sich Odds als Quotienten aus der Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass ein Ereignis eintritt, und der Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass es nicht eintritt (Gegenwahrscheinlichkeit):

Dabei ist der Wert des Odds und die Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass das Ereignis eintritt. Ist der Wert eines Odds eins, dann ist dies mit einer 50:50-Chance identisch. Werte größer als eins drücken aus, dass die Wahrscheinlichkeit im Zähler den größeren Wert aufweist, während Werte kleiner eins bedeuten, dass diejenige im Nenner größer ist.

Odds (kansverhouding) is een aan het Engels ontleende term die vooral bij weddenschappen gehanteerd wordt om de kans op een gebeurtenis of uitspraak aan te geven. Men spreekt van de odds voor en ook van de odds tegen. De odds voor een gebeurtenis is de verhouding van de kansen dat de gebeurtenis plaatsvindt en dat de gebeurtenis niet plaatsvindt. De odds tegen een gebeurtenis is eenvoudigweg de omgekeerde verhouding. Traditioneel worden de odds uitgedrukt als een paar gehele getallen, in de vorm van het ene getal tegen het andere.

Een oppositioneel-opstandige gedragsstoornis is een psychische aandoening die in het DSM-IV is ingedeeld bij de ontwikkelingsstoornissen. De aandoening wordt ook aangeduid met de Engels afkorting ODD (Oppositional Defiant Disorder).

Esempio: nella cittadina statunitense di Framingham, su un totale di 656 soggetti appartenenti alla classe di età fra 50 e 60 anni all'epoca della prima rilevazione, 130 di costoro svilupparono una coronaropatia durante un follow-up di 12 anni (Framingham Heart Study). La probabilità p dell'evento "sviluppo di una coronaropatia" è data dalla proporzione 130/656=0,20. L'odds di sviluppare una coronaropatia è: p/(1-p)=0,20/(1-0,20)=0,20/0,80=0,25; ossia, 1 a 4.

Il logaritmo naturale dell'odds è detto logit.

Em Probabilidade e Estatística, a chance (em inglês: odds) de ocorrência de um evento é a probabilidade de ocorrência deste evento dividida pela probabilidade da não ocorrência do mesmo evento. Dessa maneira, se a probabilidade de ocorrência de um evento é de 80%, então as chances de ocorrência deste evento são de 4 para 1.
